Frequently Asked Questions

What UK homeowners ask us most.

Is this really free?
Yes. Quotes are 100% free with no obligation. We're paid by installers in our network, never by you.
Is solar worth it in the UK?
For most homes with an unshaded south, east or west-facing roof — yes. Electricity under the current price cap costs around 24.7p/kWh, installations are VAT-free until 31 March 2027, and the Smart Export Guarantee pays you (typically 12–15p/kWh) for electricity you don't use. A typical 4 kWp system pays for itself in roughly 8–12 years and panels are usually warrantied for 25.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
A government-backed scheme requiring larger energy suppliers to pay you for the solar electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier from about 1p to 30p/kWh — the big names currently pay around 12–15p. Your installer must be MCS-certified for you to qualify, which is why we only match MCS installers.
Are there any grants?
Beyond 0% VAT, support like ECO4 helps lower-income or low-EPC households, and some local authority schemes exist. Most homeowners simply benefit from the VAT relief and SEG payments. Your matched installers can confirm what you qualify for.
How do you make money?
When you request quotes, we share your information with up to four MCS-certified installers who pay us for the introduction. That's also why installers offer competitive pricing through us — they know they're bidding against others.
What if I rent my home?
Rooftop solar requires the property owner's approval, so installers typically work with owners. Renters can ask their landlord or explore community energy schemes.
